Bell Laboratory researcher / MIT professor Claude E. Shannon did for computer
science what Einstein did for physics. (BIT)
His student MIT juggling club is still going strong.
This group may have inspired him to make models simulate juggling.
ACTION JUGGLE THREE CLUBS 1 red and 2 white one hand black the other white gloved.
Mathematician Claude E. Shannon developed the
UNIFIED FIELD THEORY OF JUGGLING proportion.
COMPONENTS TRANSPARENCY SHANNON'S UFTOJ MODEL COMPONENTS
SHANNON'S UFTOJ MODEL interrelated the following components:
D is the dwell time,
the time a hand spends holding an object.
V is the vacant or empty hand time.
F is the object's flight time.
B stands for the number of objects tossed and
H for the number of hands doing the tossing.
ACTION Juggle 3 clubs: red one and 2 white to emphasize the PATTERNS.
Notice two different cycles occurring as I juggle these clubs a little higher:
A CLUB CYCLE, (pause then say flight - dwell pause) where F + D is the time in seconds for a club cycle.
AND
A HAND CYCLE, (pause then say vacant - dwell pause) where V + D is the time in seconds for a hand cycle.
The number of clubs divided by the number of hands must equal the club cycle time divided by the hand cycle time.
ACTION read as the or sum of ... divided by the sum of
So we get: B/H = (F + D)/(V + D)
CHANT Shannon's Proportion
Let's look at a special case for three balls and two hands doing the unit juggle.
SECOND TRANSPARENCY Special case for Shannon's Proportion
For B = 3, H = 2 and F = .576 sec, Shannon's proportion simplifies to:
3V + D = 1.152 sec.
A linear graph shows the juggler's variations for the special case 16" high unit juggle.
THIRD TRANSPARENCY Hot Potatoes vrs. Delayed Juggling Character.
ACTION Juggle the three picture pins - Galileo - Shannon - and Beek two turns low and high could demo Hot po and Delayed JC.
As you can see, long dwell time delays the toss to the last moment while short
dwell time is "hot potatoes" juggling.
We are close to the story about current research now!
