FINDING DISTANCES FROM A GRAPH GRID
GRID WORK
Looking at the OLAP Grid Map, take a metric ruler and find out how many
centimeters wide each 120 foot grid marker is. Write this out as
120 ft. = _________ cm, however many centimeters.
Now that you know how many centimeters are in a 120 ft. section of the
grid, find the number of centimeters across the front porch stoop of the
Palace Theater (-20, -40, 575).
We will call the distance across the
front porch stoop P.
P is to be measured in feet.
(P in feet)
divided by
(Measured number of centimeters in Palace Theater's
Front Porch Stoop.)
=
(120 feet)
divided by
(Measured number of centimeters in one length of Map Grid.)
What is the distance across the Palace Theater's Front Porch Stoop?
You may need to measure the distance in the y direction and find a scale for
it that could be different than the x direction.
We made a group project out of this example by giving a different building
or ride to each group to find the dimensions of their building or ride by
working out the scale.
You may wish to make a copy of the coordinate map of OLAP (file name is:
six9407.gif) then use your paint or graphics program to make the x match
the y scale and to cut out the individual buildings or rides.
