A Moving Walkway Experiment at Lambert Airport

The graph represents different classmates times to travel 279 feet 10.5 inches on a moving walkway.

Average time = total seconds/number of times = 1520.05/11 = 138.186

--------- To find the average rate for the class use the formula: distance=rate(time) or rate=distance/time. Distance of the walkway=284ft. 9.5in. To convert feet to inches take 284ft(12)in.=3408+9.5in.=3417.5in. The classes average time was 138.186sec. Since Rate=distance/time Take R=3417.5in./138.186sec. Rate=24.73inches per second To Convert back to feet divide by 12 since there are 12 inches in 1 foot. Rate would then =2.06ft. per sec.

Another example of rate=distance/time. Rate for Mr. Thayer's time. Thayer's time=2min.18.15sec. or 138.15sec. Distance =284ft.9.5in. or 3,417.5in. Rate=3,417.5in./138.15sec. Rate=24.74inches per sec. or Rate=2.06feet per second
